It’s all in the details. One of the most fascinating things about vintage handbags are the fine details. In the 1940’s the shape of the bag was often its most important detail. Shape coupled with Lucite zipper pulls and closures made for some stunning handbags. In the 1950s atomic shapes and clasps with a deco flare were the rage. Much attention was paid to handbag frames and closure styles. Oversized brass kiss closures, leather wrapped frames along with pleated or ruched exterior detail were seen on the arm of many women.

One of the most telling features of a vintage handbag is its hardware; brass fittings, intricate closure mechanisms, and surprising or whimsical details. It’s true they just don’t make things like they used to. The detail on vintage bags is extraordinary whether it is understated or over the top.

The exterior details are always intriguing but the interior details are the secret delights. Outside details will frequently consist of outside pockets with attached coin purses, contrast piping, pierced and cut leather detail. Another artful detail is the travel themed exterior. In the 1950s and 60s many high-end makers used brass plates with the names of famous shopping destinations, cities and hotels to adorn the exterior.

The interior details are luxurious and rich. Frequently they are the best kept secrets of the bag. What a delight it is to open your handbag and discovery a sumptuous striped silk lining or butter kid leather or even a shock of crimson suede. Often exotic skins are lined with yet another type of skin. Unlike purses of today, vintage handbags were outfitted with satin-sleeved mirrors, combs, attached coin purses and some with their very own lipstick case or atomizer.

The finishing touch is the handle. It is the grand finale of the entire piece. Handles range from simple padded leather to an elaborately detailed chain, to strong architecturally styled Bakelite or Lucite. Evening bags are often fitted with glass or metal bracelet handles.
